Release Notes — Magpie

Inventory for shopkeepers — track what’s on your shelves, what’s running low, and what sold, without leaving the floor. Below is everything that’s changed since Magpie’s launch.

Version 1.4.3 — August 12, 2026

A bug-fix release

Selecting several products at once and deleting them could close the app. Deleting them one at a time was never affected, and nothing was lost when it happened — the products were removed correctly, and the crash came afterwards, while the list was redrawing. It’s fixed.

While in there, Select All got fixed too. It had been hiding until you’d already selected a product by hand, which is precisely backwards — it’s now there the moment you enter selection mode.

Print your own labels

Every shop has things that don’t scan.

Loose screws sold by weight. Produce. Anything made on the premises. Anything whose barcode has been rubbed off by a year in a stockroom. Until now these were the slowest part of any count — the items you worked through by hand while everything else went at the speed of the camera.

Magpie 1.4 prints labels for them.

A sheet at a time

Pick your products, choose a size, print. Labels lay out in a grid, and Magpie tells you how many fit a sheet and how much paper the job will take before you commit to it. Select fifty products from the Products list and they print as one job, not fifty.

Sizes are matched to label stock you can actually buy, and each names its equivalent — Avery 5160, 22806, 5163, 5164, along with the inkjet and larger-pack numbers for the same die-cut — so you can check the app against the box in your drawer rather than guessing at inches.

And because a shop’s sheet is usually already part-used, you can tell Magpie which position to start at. It leaves the peeled ones blank.

QR or barcode

QR codes work for every product, including ones with no barcode of their own — that’s the case labels exist for, and it’s why QR is the default.

If you’d rather have a traditional barcode, choose Code 128 and your labels will read on a handheld laser scanner as well as on a phone. Products without a barcode of their own still print a QR code, and Magpie tells you how many before you print. Either way the label carries the product name and price.

Then count them like anything else

A Magpie label works everywhere a barcode does — Scan & Adjust, counting, searching. A product that never had a barcode can now be counted as quickly as one that did.

Which is the real point. Version 1.3 made counting fast for everything that scans. This one makes everything scan.

Version 1.3.0 — August 6, 2026

Counting, rebuilt

Counting a shelf should not feel like data entry.

Until now, counting in Magpie meant scanning an item, watching the camera close, typing a number, saving it, and opening the camera again for the next one. On a two-hundred item count that is a thousand taps and four hundred screen changes.

In 1.3.0 the camera stays open for the whole count. You scan a barcode, tap plus or minus for what is actually on the shelf, and scan the next item. The card swaps under your thumb. There is no save button.

For everything that doesn’t scan

Loose goods, produce, a torn label, an item that never had a barcode — these are the things a small shop has most of, and they used to be the slowest part of a count. Now they are countable straight from the list, with the same large plus and minus buttons, and a “None” button for a shelf that has run empty.

Finish where you’re standing

When every item is counted, Magpie offers to update your stock right there in the camera. And if you change your mind, you have thirty seconds to undo it — your quantities go back exactly as they were. Updating stock after a count used to be the one thing in Magpie you could not take back.

An open count is now one tap from Home, and lands you straight back in the scanner.

Words a shopkeeper actually uses

A shopkeeper thinks “the shelf says eight, the app says ten, I’m short two.” Nobody thinks “variance.” So Magpie now says Difference. A “count session” is just a count. “Expected” is should be. “Apply counts to inventory” is update my stock. In all three languages.

Calmer screens

Home and Reports have been cleared of anything that said the same thing twice, so each screen leads with what needs doing rather than what happened. Reports now opens with what needs your attention instead of a wall of numbers, and every card takes you to the screen where you can act on it.

The scanner wears Magpie’s own colours now, the launch screen is out of your way faster, and text scales properly if you rely on Larger Text.

Also fixed

Tapping a count sometimes did nothing at all. The search and camera buttons beside a product’s barcode opened History instead of doing their own job. And scanning the same barcode twice in one session was ignored until you closed and reopened the camera. All three are fixed.

Your inventory continues to sync privately through iCloud, including shops shared with your team.

Version 1.2.8 — August 5, 2026

More room to run your shop

This release brings a proper iPad experience, and full English, French, and Spanish support.

Your existing inventory keeps syncing privately through iCloud, including shops shared with your team.

Version 1.2.7 — July 28, 2026

Smarter, more reliable scanning

This update makes barcode scanning clearer, smarter, and more reliable.

Clearer scanning guidance. Easier to understand what to do when a barcode is highlighted on screen.
Clearer scan confirmation. It’s more obvious which barcode you’ve selected.
Unknown barcodes now go straight to Add Product, with product details looked up online automatically.
Fixed rescanning a different barcode on the Add Product screen not refreshing the lookup.
Simplified Help & Tips, with clearer guidance and the ability to search it.
Fixed a crash when creating categories, locations, and suppliers.
Updated the support and privacy links in Settings.
Additional polish and reliability improvements throughout the app.

Version 1.2.5 — July 27, 2026

Clearer screens, smoother everyday use

This release focuses on making Magpie easier to use, less overwhelming, and faster to navigate day to day.

Refined the UX across the app. Home, Products, Reports, Count Sessions, Settings, and More all got a pass.
Clearer for less technical users. Simpler labels, shorter copy, and cleaner flows throughout.
A stronger first impression. Upgraded splash screen for a more polished launch experience.
Fixed “Open Count” on Home not working correctly.
Fixed “Resume where you left off” on Count Sessions not opening the active count directly.
Easier to recover from a failed search. Product search no longer leaves you stuck when a search doesn’t turn up a match.
Easier to scan. The Products list makes stock and status clearer at a glance.
Fixed “Photo Library” opening the camera instead of your photo library.
Added the correct photo library permission usage strings.
Fixed the add/edit product photo menu that could open and immediately close.

Overall, this update is about confidence and ease of use: fewer confusing moments, clearer screens, and smoother everyday inventory work.

Version 1.2.4 — July 26, 2026

This release makes working as a team a first-class part of Magpie.

Share your shop with your team. Invite a teammate and you can both add and edit inventory in the same shop.
Live two-way sync. Edits now flow between everyone on the team as they happen — no need to reopen the app to see the latest.
View-only team members. Invite people who should see everything but not change anything; every edit control is hidden for them.
Product photos sync to the whole team. Full-resolution images now travel with your shared inventory, not just thumbnails.
A clearer start. When you first open Magpie you now choose to create your own shop or join a team you’ve been invited to.
Counts appear instantly. A count you save now shows up right away.
Sharing reliability fixes. Team invites that could hang on “Preparing” or arrive as a blank link now work, and sync errors are reported more clearly.

Counting by pack size

Count and receive by the case. Count sessions and Quick Adjust now understand pack sizes, so you can receive or count mixed packs (e.g. cases and singles) and see a pack-by-pack breakdown of each count.
Count variance report to see where your shelf and your records differ (Pro).
Clearer Free-plan usage. A usage bar shows how many products you’ve added against your plan’s limit.
Fixed pack sizes that couldn’t be edited or removed after they were created.
