Privacy Policy

Magpie is an inventory app for small shops. Your inventory data belongs to you. It’s stored on your device and, if you subscribe, in your own iCloud account. We (Bunker41 — Jason McBride) do not run servers that collect your data, we do not use analytics or tracking, we show no ads, and we never sell or share your information. The app makes only a few external requests, described below.
Information the app handles
Inventory you create. Products, quantities, categories, locations, suppliers, notes, prices, counts, history, and any photos you add. This is stored locally on your device using Apple’s Core Data. If you subscribe to a plan that includes sync, it is also stored in your private iCloud account.
Camera. With your permission, the app uses the camera to scan barcodes and to take product photos. Photos you take are saved as part of your inventory data (device + your iCloud). The camera feed itself is processed on your device and is not sent to us.
Barcode lookups. When you scan or enter a barcode, the app may send only that barcode number to third-party product databases to fetch a product name, category, and image — Open Food Facts and a UPC database service. No personal information and none of your inventory is sent. These lookups are optional to the app’s core function; results are suggestions you can accept or ignore.
iCloud sync & sharing (paid plans). With a Pro or Team subscription, your data syncs across your devices through Apple iCloud (CloudKit), in your own iCloud account. With Team, you can share a shop with people you explicitly invite; those people can see and edit the shared inventory. Sharing is handled by Apple’s CloudKit and is governed by Apple’s iCloud terms and privacy policy.
Purchases. Subscriptions are processed by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store your name, card number, or payment details — Apple handles all of that. We only receive Apple’s confirmation of whether a subscription is active.
On-device features. Optional Face ID / Touch ID app lock and local notifications (low-stock and expiration reminders) run entirely on your device. Biometric data never leaves your device and is handled by Apple’s system.
What we do NOT do
- We do not have accounts or servers that collect your inventory data.
- We do not use analytics, crash-tracking, advertising, or any third-party tracking SDKs.
- We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information.
- We do not track you across apps or websites.
Third parties
- Apple — iCloud/CloudKit (sync & sharing) and the App Store (purchases). Governed by Apple’s privacy policy.
- Open Food Facts — the barcode you look up is sent to their public product database. Governed by their privacy policy.
- UPC database service — used as a fallback for barcode lookups; receives only the barcode number.
Data retention and deletion
Because your data lives on your device and in your own iCloud, you control it:
- Delete a product in the app to remove it.
- Delete the app to remove its on-device data.
- Remove the app’s data from iCloud in Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage / Apps using iCloud, or by turning off iCloud for the app.
We hold no separate copy to delete, because we don’t collect one.
Children
Magpie is a business tool and is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your region). We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Security
Data on your device is protected by iOS. iCloud data is encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple. Because we don’t operate a server holding your data, there is no central database of your information to breach.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (e.g. GDPR/CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete personal data. Since your data is under your control on your device and in your iCloud, you can exercise most of these directly in the app or in iOS/iCloud settings. For questions, contact us below.
Changes
We may update this policy; the “Last updated” date will change. Material changes will be noted in the app or on this page.
